قسمتي از متن فيلم: I’m Rob McDonald I work as lead scientist for the global cities program at the Nature Conservancy which tries to use the power of nature to make cities more sustainable and more livable by cleaning drinking water for example by filtering stormwater by reducing urban heat island effect or air pollution so I

Have the pleasure of being signed support to a network of cities all over the globe that are trying to do that so cities are challenged by climate change in a lot of ways maybe just two ways I see cities trying to adopt a lot one is to sea level rise and coastal hazards

That’s that people along the coast are facing they’re trying to plan smartly for that and another is he urban heat waves are going to get more frequent they’re going to get more intense and so smart cities are trying to do he action plans to be ready for that challenge so

That’s just two examples but there’s lots of ways cities are going to have to get in front of climate change and adapt in advance so for heat action plans for example one smart way cities have tried to start getting ready for climate changes first of all having cooling

Centers having a way to get vulnerable populations there and then also thinking about how they can mitigate temperatures so planning trees using cool roofs of other strategies that reduce the temperature in the city so you both want to reduce the problem and protect vulnerable populations from the harm I

Think climate adaptation strategies for cities have the potential to make cities more livable and more green as well and at the Nature Conservancy we try to do a little bit of both so tree planning for example reduces air temperatures it helps make the city more resilient to

Urban heat waves but it also makes it more pleasant to walk around on a day to day basis and it contributes to all these other benefits cities want to have as they try to make the shitties walkable and commercial successes so those two agendas fit together really well

So the first step is always having knowledge of climate change and what it’s going to do and i would say that we reached a point where big cities often have that knowledge but many medium and small-sized cities haven’t thought yet about climate change and what it’s going

To mean for their cities so that’s knowledge is the first step and the second step is being able to lay out some first no regrets actions they can take to start adapting to climate change a lot of cities wrap themselves in knots trying to plan for the very long term

But often there are some smart first steps they can take in the near term to adapt to climate change and so I think smart cities focus first on those and getting those done while there also may be doing the longer term planning is part of a sustainability plan for

Example I’ve been excited in the US by how many cities are trying to use what’s called green infrastructure constructed wetlands sidewalk berms to deal with issues of stormwater drainage and cleaning up their their storm water and wastewater problem there’s dozens and dozens of cities that are trying to

Rebuild their strong motor system more smartly using nature to clean up part of that water probably that some of the standout cities in the US would be Philadelphia which has made a big commitment to using green infrastructure and stormwater at a big scale DC where we’re sitting has some very interesting

Programs to create a trading market for storm water retention credits and so that’s in its infancy but it’s a parallel to wetland mitigation banking and it’s exciting to see that market happening what we’re hoping happens habitat 3 the Nature Conservancy is a discussion about the role nature and natural infrastructure can play in

Making cities more livable on multiple fronts cleaner drinking water helping deal with storm water and drainage reducing urban heat waves we’re trying to have a broad discussion about the role of nutrient cities in the 21st century and how you plan for that how you incorporate nature into the plans

For those cities so it’s just this great you to have that discussion with urban planners and development officials all together at the same table
