Finished up a wonderful presentation here at the APA policy and advocacy conference and a couple questions about the work cities are doing in the housing to me community development space tell us about what some of the most innovative cities are doing in that area what are the projects they’re doing to

Really bring this together well I think what cities are finding is that to address the underlying issues of poverty and segregation by race and income that it’s not enough just to provide the housing although that is an essential and and Herculean effort in a lot of communities but that they also have to

Engage the transportation investments the job creation investments education health that it’s really a multi-faceted approach that changes the life outcomes for people it’s not any one of those things alone that can really make a difference it has to be all together so what are some of the biggest challenges

Me to stick with three that planners are facing on the ground well I think that in a you know in a global context that we’re seeing an you know an incredible amount of urbanization and that the population growth in many many places in the world

In major major cities is is is very very high people are coming to cities for opportunity and it’s been increasingly difficult in those cities that are growing in jobs to be able to keep up with the population and the the irony is as well the job growth and the Economic

Opportunity is what is attracting so many people that that the number of people also creates incredible demand for housing that most cities that have simply not been able to meet so housing costs have been very very high so you end up with issues of you know informal unsafe unsanitary settlements

Homelessness and a host of other ills that you know that that undermine the promise that that cities the hold for so many people and unless question for you you’ve worked at every level of government and maybe provide us with one takeaway that you can share that talks

About how these levels can work together to create communities of opportunity well that’s a really good question I do think that in many ways even though I’m a federal official now I think that things might work best when the local governments take the lead they have proven to be extremely fast to

Innovate willing to take risks that sometimes other levels of government are insulated from or unwilling to do and that they have become increasingly demanding in a good way about what they expect from their state and federal governments to be able to support their innovations and their efforts to address

Real problems on the ground so you know what I would say is all of us should be trying to work more closely with our local leaders and then share those best practices as quickly as we can across the nation
