Hi I’m Emily posi with the American Planning Association and I’m joined today with Dylan Mullenix Dylan is the assistant director of the Des Moines area MPO and he’s also the state chair of the planners advocacy network for APA Iowa Dylan thanks so much for being here

Today thanks for having me so Dylan we just mentioned you’re the state chair talk to me about what that means and why you decided to take on this position for the planners advocacy Network so part of it is it fit in well with what I do for the state chapter already which is

Legislative and policy related things outreach and so forth so I have a committee already and it made sense that when it needed to do something on the federal side with the advocacy Network that a position that was already suited well for it already had a committee that

Could help me would do those sort of things so we have the within the advocacy networks or the you have a state chair but then you have the you know the network underneath it as well so I was able to use them so that’s really why it worked out and I’ve

Already just kind of plugged into that world I do a lot of that kind of stuff through my day job anyway with federal transportation with NPO related business so it just made sense to to kind of meld into that and do it for APA Iowa and so

Talk to me about the kind of things that you are working on the kind of projects that you’re working on as state chair to encourage members to participate actively right so some of the things that we do we have the caucuses in Iowa so that’s a easy thing every four years

We get a lot of attention and we’re trying to bring some attention to Iowa and to the advocacy Network through that so when we have the Delta the caucuses last time around we did some work of just trying to highlight planners importance to the caucus process and with national politics

We had Hillary Clinton come through our Transit Center in town and Des Moines and so we tried to capitalize on that a little bit also just taking the information that APA provides and just dispersing that through our membership and you know right now we’re dealing with appropriations and with the

Proposed budgets and kind of the impacts of that and just really trying to educate everybody on what’s going on with that so those are a few things that we’re trying to do and so what would you say to chapters who have not yet appointed a state chair and are thinking

About how best to do that I think it’s I’m they do it it’s it’s not a overwhelming time commitment I think you know it’s kind of what you want to make of it but I think the the resources that APA provides makes it really easy I mean you

Guys provide all the information we just have to kind of disperse that out and make it local where we can and so it’s you know right now with the CDBG stuff I don’t deal with that in my day job but I know who to call on that does that and

Can put a lot of good information together and and provide that to our membership and last question for you today Dylan just wondering well how does the planners Advocacy network give you and planners in Iowa a voice in Washington DC so we like again we we

Know what’s going on and so if we’re there or if our memberships there we know how to you know topics to speak up on so if we’re against it a later example later this week I’m going to be in DC and our chapter president is going

To be in DC for another conference so we’re gonna try to get in and talk with our legislative delegation on on some of these you know the issues of the again with the CDBG and the home funds especially tiger funds and so forth so we wouldn’t know a lot of those things

If not for the advocacy Network and the information that’s provided especially that doesn’t relate to our day jobs but now that we know we’re gonna be there anyway it gives us a good end to to reach out and talk to them and we’ll keep providing you that information that’s for sure

Dylan thank you so much for being here today thank you I’m Emily posi with the American Planning Association and to learn more about the planners advocacy Network just visit planning org backslash policy
