با توجه به واقعیتی که منطقه کردستان در قلمرو بلندی‌های زمینی ترکیه و ایران واقع شده است، قابلیت تحمل ناپایداری‌های زمین لرزه در این ناحیه کمتر از مناطق دیگر کشور است.

از طرفی، مطالعات بسیاری نشان می‌دهند که کردستان با توجه به موقعیت جغرافیایی، دارای فعالیت زمین لرزه و رخداد آخرالزمانی است. در واقع، به دلیل طبیعت و حاشیه‌نشینی این منطقه، تعداد زیادی آسیب جانی و مالی در پی زمین لرزه های متعدد اتفاق افتاده است.

در نتیجه، می‌توان گفت که کردستان به دلیل موقعیت جغرافیایی و شرایط زمین‌شناسی خود مستعد آسیب‌پذیری در برابر زمین‌لرزه‌ها است و لازمه توجه به سیستم های پیشگیری و امدادرسانی در این منطقه می‌باشد.

An Evaluation of Kurdistan’s Vulnerability to Earthquakes Examined

The head of the Department of Urban Planning and Architecture in Kurdistan province, Mustafa Rezaei, warned about the high number of unstable residential units in Iran, with over 5.5 million units lacking proper construction and 2.7 million units without any structural support, making them more susceptible to damage during earthquakes. He stated that Iran experiences a magnitude 6 earthquake every 10 years, and smaller earthquakes below magnitude 5 every year. Housing units in historical, dilapidated, and informal settlements, as well as incompatible urban land use and industrial facilities, all present risks. Rezaei called for better planning and management by local and national authorities, using the example of Japan, where despite frequent high magnitude earthquakes, casualty rates are low due to earthquake-resistant building measures. He also emphasized the need to improve and introduce open spaces within cities to prevent higher casualty rates during earthquakes, which was a factor in Turkey’s recent earthquake relief efforts.
